‘Long hot summer of 2018, the three of them outside Park Hill flats in Sheffield. Cool drinks. Sunnies. Smizz takes their picture. Na, na, na, na, hey, hey, hey, says Emma—we look like the Bananarama of Art Writing—and laughs. We should totally do it—says Rachel. Who are Bananarama?—asks Louise’.

Bolland, Finney, and Smith have undertaken a critical / creative writing through of Bananarama singles, including  Cruel Summer (1984),  Venus (1986), and I Want You Back (1988). Written under a ‘pop constraint’—the texts were conceptually produced over pints at the Rutland Arms in Sheffield, this pamphlet includes an A3 full colour fold out poster based on the original photograph (taken by Sarah ‘Smizz’ Smith) that was the original impetus for their work.

Bananarama were, and are, a British pop vocal group formed in 1981 by friends Sara Dallin, Siobhan Fahey, and Keren Woodward, still credited as having the most UK chart entries in the world of any all-women group.
